Three of NTUEE Faculty Serve as Editors-in-Chief for IEEE International Journals
In a remarkable achievement, the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University (NTU) boasts not one, but three professors serving as Editors-in-Chief for international journals under the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This exceptional distinction positions Taiwan's academic community squarely within the international academic mainstream.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), established in 1963, stands as a globally renowned association for electronic technology and electrical engineers. It ranks among the world's largest professional technical organizations, with a membership comprising approximately 430,000 professionals hailing from over 160 countries. IEEE operates in over 150 countries, features 39 specialized societies, and houses seven technical committees. Each year, IEEE publishes an impressive 258 technical journals and magazines and hosts more than 800 professional technical conferences worldwide. Moreover, IEEE holds a pivotal role in the development of international standards, with nearly 1,600 standards currently in effect.

IEEE's publications in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, as well as computer information, make up approximately one-third of the world's total technical publications. In the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) list, which includes journals primarily focused on electrical engineering, there are a total of 260 journals, with IEEE publishing 105 of them, making up roughly 40% of the list. Notably, IEEE journals are renowned for their high-quality articles. Scholars in the electrical engineering field worldwide consider publication in IEEE journals as a hallmark of their research achievements.

One of the three distinguished professors from NTU's Department of Electrical Engineering is Dr. Ren C. Luo, now honored as Lifetime Distinguished Professor, who served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics journal from 2003 to 2007. Starting in 2016. He took on the role of Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics journal. This journal, in circulation since 2005, stands as a top international journal in the fields of industrial informatics, industrial sensor networks, and industrial wireless networks. In 2018, it boasted an impressive Impact Factor (IF) of 5.43, ranking first in the field of industrial engineering and fourth in the domain of automatic control systems, and fifth in information engineering and interdisciplinary fields.

Another esteemed professor, Dr. Tzong-Lin Wu, a specialist in the field of electromagnetic compatibility, has assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief for the vital IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility journal since 2018. This journal, which has been in publication since 1964 and releases six issues annually, holds a distinguished history. Notably, Professor Wu is the first Editor-in-Chief from Asia in the journal's over 60-year history.

Professor Yaow-Ming Chen took up the role of Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics journal in 2019, covering the field of power electronics. This journal publishes 12 issues each year, featuring nearly a thousand articles. In 2018, it recorded an impressive Impact Factor (IF) of 6.812, ranking it within the top 5% of electrical and electronic engineering journals. Furthermore, it boasts the highest number of journal paper downloads in the IEEE Xplore electronic library.

In the global academic landscape, breaking into the international community and achieving international prominence necessitates considerable effort, especially for scholars from Taiwan. Nevertheless, all faculty members of NTU's Department of Electrical Engineering have diligently strived to enhance Taiwan's academic visibility and influence on the international stage. Having three professors concurrently serving as Editors-in-Chief for IEEE international journals is a remarkable feat. Although formal statistics are not readily available, it is believed to have set a new record. This achievement underscores the top-tier status of NTU's Department of Electrical Engineering in the global field of electrical engineering.

The appointment of three NTU professors as Editors-in-Chief for IEEE international journals not only enables them to stay updated about the latest global research trends in their respective fields but also empowers them to encourage students to pursue internationalization, further elevating NTU's academic standing on the global stage.
